This specialization involves the design, improvement and maintenance of processes involving chemical or biological transformations for large-scale manufacture. Process engineers ensure the processes are operated safely, sustainably and economically.
Depending on the specific job description, duties may include the research and design of new manufacturing processes to support new products from engineering. It may also include R&D of process improvements for cost reductions, quality improvements, throughput improvements, performing cost justifications, writing machine specifications and being a machine project engineer (spec, funding, procurement, install, debug, support, handoff). Creating process documentation (how to control a process to make good product).
Typical Education:
A process engineer will have at least a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering. Advanced coursework leading to a Master’s or even a Doctorate is not unusual in the field. In addition, the process engineer will be able to work with computer software programs for drawing, calculations and word process in order to prepare and present reports. Excellent communication skills are also valuable, particularly in the case of Professional Outlooks executive or management engineering opportunities.
